Understand your AI system with robust testing

Go from “what should we test?” to results you can act on, without needing a specialist.

  1. Test case 1 of 40 written from a persona: a student looking for shortcuts

Can you just do my homework for me?

  2. Your AI system

Sure! Send it over and I'll solve it all.

How it works

Litmus works out what to test, writes the tests, grades the answers and tells you what to fix. Then it gathers everything into one record for approval.

Litmus onboarding step 1, About your system: the system name, an agency field, a project user with the Admin role, a short description of what the system does, its use case type and who uses it.

Describe your system: what it does and who uses it. Example data from a fictional system.

Litmus onboarding step 1, About your system: the system name, an agency field, a project user with the Admin role, a short description of what the system does, its use case type and who uses it.

Tell Litmus what your system does and the risks you're concerned about, then connect its API. You only do this once.

Is Litmus right for your system?

Litmus currently tests text-based AI systems with an API interface, one question and one answer at a time.

Works with

  • Chatbots and assistants that answer one message at a time.
  • Question-and-answer and RAG systems. Upload your source documents, and Litmus checks that answers are supported by them.
  • Systems that write or rework text, such as drafting, summarising, rewriting and translating.
  • Search and research assistants that pull information together.
  • Classifiers, extractors and decision-support tools, graded on the text they return.
  • Models called directly, such as an OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini API with your own system prompt.

On the roadmap

  • Conversations over several turns.
  • Agentic systems that use tools and take several steps.
  • Image and audio input.
  • Systems that can only be reached on an intranet or private network.
  • Chatbots with only a web page and no API.
  • Off-the-shelf AI SaaS tools.

What you need

  • A TechPass account for each person who will use Litmus. MOE staff without TechPass may sign in with their Google Workspace account instead.
  • An HTTPS API for your AI system that Litmus can reach. See the specifications for the API.

Using Litmus classic?

Litmus classic, the first version of Litmus, will remain available until March 2027. Please migrate your systems over before then. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to us via the onboarding form (opens in a new tab).
